Trailer

“director Nick Winston whips up a sharp pace that cracks through the tragic twosome’s murderous time, never unnecessarily alighting. It means the show zips by faster than a 1934 Ford Model 40 B Fordor Deluxe sedan – high-octane musical thrills served by a top-notch company.”

WHATSONSTAGE ★★★★

“Nick Winston’s direction is another badge for his sash of staged production successes. He manages to capture the core of the musical and bring it to life in the most simple but effective ways. The audience is hooked from the very first note and stays entranced throughout.”

THEATRE TONIC ★★★★★

“Winston's vision is picturesque, but also very Old Hollywood. Sets (designed by Philip Witcomb) change quickly from hideouts in small Texas towns to petrol stations in the middle of nowhere, all pervaded by a run-down, rusty look that reiterates the disillusionment with the broken American dream.”

BROADWAY WORLD ★★★★

“Director Nick Winston has helmed a fluid and clever production, using the space at The Garrick to encapsulate the intimacy of this production. He excels in creating engaging moments through montage sequences”

BEYOND THE CURTAIN ★★★★★

“Nick Winston’s direction is first class and makes the interactions between the characters feel very natural. Characters don’t stop talking or singing to apply lipstick, smoke a cigarette or have a drink of water – an effective technique that adds to the feeling that this is natural conversation rather than scripted dialogue.”

FAIRY POWERED PRODUCTIONS ★★★★★

“Nick Winston’s production really captures the sense of disillusionment and anger that existed in America at the 1930’s that is powerful to see. It is a production that makes a strong case to empathise with the characters in some shape or form given the state of the country at the time – but never once does it excuse their behaviour. Sleekly put together, there are many beautiful scenes dotted throughout the production including the way in which opening number ‘Picture Show’ is staged – giving plenty of insight into their upbringings and dreams as children and then how it blended into their adulthood, while the stripped back nature of the way in which ‘You Love Who You Love’ is captured is haunting and mesmerising. But it is also the way in which Winston ensures there is a hint of playfulness through his choreography to ensure it is entertaining and not overly sombre – as seen through the performance of ‘You’re Goin’ Back to Jail’.”
